Just a few updates and some new projects.

newLISP modules

A Google Code project has been created for my newLISP modules. Anyone who would like to contribute is welcome. It can be found at http://code.google.com/p/actools-newlisp/.

Phorms

The Phorms library also has a Google Project page, located at http://code.google.com/p/php-phorms/. Contributions, as always, are welcome.

PHP Pipeline

PHP Pipeline is an asynchronous HTTP pool. It is very simple to use and extremely efficient on resources. Code and samples available at http://code.google.com/p/php-pipeline/.

JoQ

JoQ is a simple message broker written in Java. Its design goals are efficiency, speed, and ease of use. It is optimized for use as a massive job queue for multiple work flows. One neat feature is the ability to create multiple queues on the fly and add jobs to multiple queues; retrieved jobs are removed from all queues in which they appear.

This is a fairly new project and there is not much code yet written, but if anyone has any suggestions, comments, or contributions, I am happy to hear them.

Updating modules for newLISP 10

I am in the process of updating my module repository for newlisp 10. In the process, I am refactoring each module and doing some updates. I am paying shockingly little attention to backward compatibility, so if you want to use the new modules, be prepared to do update your own code.

A couple of notable changes are a complete replacement of the mysql module, functional has been renamed to matching, and the addition of the Element module, which provides utilities to write XML (or any structured markup) quickly and efficiently.

As modules are updated, I am making a note of it in their descriptions.

New look

Artful Code has a new look. Well, not entirely new. I didn’t write the theme or anything. But I did migrate to WordPress because it’s a hell of a lot easier to maintain and I don’t have to write every new feature I want myself :).

If you notice anything that does not work, leave a comment and let me know!

Artful Code is going back to Haloscan comments rather than trying to keep up with moderating comments or adding my own verification. Comments from the old system are lost, but that’s OK because most were spam anyway :)

newLISP modules section

I have added a new area to the site specifically for newLISP modules. I am in the process of documenting all of my libraries and adding them to that page. A couple of notable modules:

CSV – a module for parsing CSV files
Mysql – a wrapper for the standard MySQL module, with some helpful additions
Http – a simple, bare-bones HTTP 1.0 library
SocketServer – an extensible socket server framework
Xmlrpc-server – an XML-RPC server using SocketServer and Http
generics – generic functions for newLISP in the style of CLOS
locks – FOOP classes for process synchronization

There is also a utilities library, which contains functions and classes required by the other libraries.

newLISP 9.4.2 is required for several of these (util.lsp requires 9.4.2 due to a dictionary syntax bug in 9.4.1).

Update (2008-07-09): I’ve moved a few modules from the projects page to the modules page, most notably the request, response, and xml modules.

Update (2009-02-10): Several of these modules have disappeared (SocketServer and locks) and have been replaced. The new modules are sockets, which is more generalized and powerful than SocketServer was, and MP, which is a full-featured multi-processing module.

Down time

Artfulcode.net is on one of the 9,000 servers hit by the explosion in Texas. My host has been working tirelessly to get everyone back online. Fortunately, we appear to be up and running now.

New website

After a few months of hosting Artful Code at nearlyfreespeech.net, I have moved to webfaction.com and purchased the domain name, artfulcode.net.

nearlyfreespeech.net has many qualities, including a vast array of support for various cgis (including newLISP and OCaml.) However, the fact is that all of that support is contingent on only running web applications via cgi (except for PHP which runs exclusively through mod_php), removing the ability to efficiently automate a website. web faction includes support for Django, Turbo Gears, various PHP frameworks, and some framework in a language called Ruby out of the box.

At any rate, the site has been redesigned and you can expect new posts to resume presently.

On hiatus
